Introduction
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR refers to hands-on emergency intervention. It restores heartbeat and breathing in cardiac arrest victims and other individuals, whose breath stops suddenly. In most cases, cardiac arrest takes place from near-drowning or heart attack. However, imparting CPR is not an easy task.
Instead, a candidate has to be CPR certified by acquiring an online or in-person program offered by a reputed institute. In particular, candidates must learn the steps to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on adults from the instructors offering CPR training and certification.
Steps to Perform CPR in Adults and Children
According to the experts of Red Cross CPR, you should follow the mentioned steps to apply CPR on adults. Here, adults refer to every victim above 8 years old.
Place the Hands on the Chest
You should imagine a line between the two nipples of the victim. Later, place the heel of your hand directly on the respective line and in the sternum or center of the patient’s chest. Place your second hand on top of your first hand. Make sure to center your entire body weight on your hands directly.
Apply Chest Compressions
Push hard to a minimum depth of 2 inches but a maximum of 2.4 inches. Moreover, the compression should be about 2 times in one second until the victim responds. Make sure to avoid bouncing your hands but lift your body weight off the victim in between the chest compressions.
Give Mouth Breath or Rescue Breath
If you have undergone CPR training and are CPR Certified, you may give two mouth breaths or rescue breaths after pushing 30 times on the chest. However, you must be comfortable while performing the steps.
Repeat Cycles
Repeat cycles of hands-on training and rescue breathing in a 30:2 ratio of compression and breath until the victim wakes up or medical experts arrive.
Steps to Perform CPR in Infants
According to the instructors of Red Cross CPR, responders should perform CPR on infants as follows-
Check the Response of the Newborn Baby
You should flick the lower part of the infant’s foot to elicit the response. The activity is similar to shaking the shoulders of an adult.
Place Fingers on the Chest
Responders should place two fingers of one hand in the chest center.
Apply Chest Compressions
Use the fingers gently to compress the infant’s chest to about a depth of 1.5 inches. Make sure to perform only two compressions in one second.
Conduct Rescue Breathing
If you are OK with rescue breath techniques, you should go a step ahead and conduct rescue breaths. For this, you should apply two breaths between each of the 30 chest compression series, as you do in the case of any elder person.
Conclusion
Overall, CPR treatment involves conducting chest compressions to retain the heartbeat until emergency medical staff arrive at the spot. Moreover, depending on the underlying condition, responders also have to perform mouth-to-mouth or rescue breathing to save the life of cardiac arrest victims. Individuals only have to acquire CPR Certification to apply CPR in the right way to infants and adults.
